Katherine Hot Springs
Katherine Hot Springs is a free natural thermal swimming area beside the Katherine River in the Northern Territory, with warm-to-cool spring water, boardwalks and seasonal access restrictions.
Katherine Hot Springs is a natural thermal swimming area in Katherine, Northern Territory, set among trees beside the Katherine River. A series of spring-fed pools, joined by developed paths and boardwalks, makes this an accessible alternative to a remote outback soak. The water is generally around 25–30°C: refreshing and mildly warm, rather than intensely hot.
Planning note (20 October 2026): Swimming access depends on river levels, weather and council decisions. The springs can close during the wet season, including parts of October–April. We have not independently confirmed that swimming is open today. Check with Katherine Town Council before travelling, and follow all closure signs.

Why Visit Katherine Hot Springs?
Katherine Hot Springs offers an unusual combination: natural spring water in an easy-to-reach town setting. Rather than hiking for kilometres or booking a commercial spa, visitors can explore an established riverside recreation area with tree shade, boardwalk access and nearby picnic space.
The experience is more like a gentle thermal swim than a hot mineral bath. That makes temperature an important part of choosing between Katherine and other Northern Territory springs: Mataranka Thermal Pool, for example, is commonly described at around 34°C, while Katherine is generally cooler.
For travellers exploring the region, Katherine Hot Springs can be a convenient stop before or after other Katherine attractions, provided swimming is permitted on the day.
Bathing Experience
The pools sit within a vegetated riverside setting. Katherine Town Council describes multiple dipping areas linked by a boardwalk, including a main pool with a ramp, handrails and rock-formed steps. The springs are naturally fed, although visitor access areas have been developed and maintained over time.
At approximately 25–30°C, the water may feel pleasantly warm on a cool morning but refreshing on a hot Northern Territory afternoon. Pool temperatures are not identical, and figures in visitor guides should be treated as approximate rather than live measurements.
Safety comes before a swim: there is no lifeguard. Never enter during a closure, flood warning or elevated river conditions. Follow council signage, and do not assume that clear-looking water means conditions are safe.
Location and Access
The springs are accessed from Riverbank Drive, Katherine NT 0850, not from within Elsey National Park. They are part of the Katherine town area, making them relatively straightforward to incorporate into a local itinerary.
Developed paths and boardwalks connect the main bathing areas. Katherine Town Council also describes a dedicated disability-access arrangement from the end of Croker Street, for which an access code may be needed. Contact council on (08) 8972 5500 for current arrangements if accessibility is essential to your visit.
The location coordinates shown on our map are approximate pool coordinates derived from OpenStreetMap mapping. Follow official road signs rather than treating the pin as a car-park entrance.
Opening Hours, Seasonal Closures and Entry
Admission is free, but that does not mean the swimming area is accessible every day of the year. Katherine Town Council’s tourism information lists 7 am–7 pm, while its public FAQ describes sunrise to sunset. Because these official descriptions differ, confirm current opening hours directly with council instead of relying on a fixed timetable.
The Katherine River rises during the wet season, and the springs are periodically closed to swimmers for flood safety and maintenance. Council has previously warned that rising waters can create dangerous conditions, including potential crocodile access. Do not swim beyond barriers or during temporary closures. For current information, consult Katherine Town Council’s tourism page or call (08) 8972 5500.
Facilities and Accessibility
Katherine Town Council reports a grassed, shaded picnic area and a children’s playground above the springs. Boardwalks, handrails and a main-pool access ramp support access to the developed swimming area; however, accessibility across every pool or path should not be assumed.
If you use a wheelchair or have specific mobility requirements, check the current ramp condition and Croker Street access arrangement before setting out. Floods and maintenance can affect paths and entry points.
Best Time to Visit
The drier part of the year generally offers the better chance of access, although council can restrict swimming whenever conditions require it. River levels matter more than the calendar alone. October is particularly worth treating cautiously: depending on the year, the early wet-season period can bring changes to access. Confirm official status before leaving your accommodation, and have another Katherine activity planned if the pools are closed.

Katherine vs Mataranka and Bitter Springs
Katherine Hot Springs differs from the better-known thermal swimming stops around Mataranka:
- Katherine Hot Springs: In Katherine town; free council-managed riverside pools; approximately 25–30°C; affected by Katherine River conditions.
- Mataranka Thermal Pool: In Elsey National Park; generally warmer water around 34°C; check current park access and pass requirements.
- Bitter Springs: Also in the Mataranka area, with a spring-fed creek-style swimming experience; confirm seasonal swimming conditions with NT Parks.
If you are planning a regional thermal-water trip, read our Mataranka Thermal Pool vs Bitter Springs guide for help choosing between those two established stops.
